Are Great Lakes In Need Of New Cutter?

It won't be long until ice appears in the Duluth-Superior harbor and on the big lake.

That means the Coast Guard cutter Alder will be put to work breaking ice and clearing the way for safe shipping channels.

Since the alder was primarily designed as a buoy tender, it has limited ability to break thick ice as Laura Langemo explains. (Full Story)
