Citizens interested in educating the public about aquatic invasive species can receive volunteer training from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on April 8 in Spicer.
The free course will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dethleff Community Center, 217 Hillcrest Ave. Pre-registration is required. Contact Evan Freeman at 320-223-7845. or by email.
“Our volunteers play a critical role in our prevention efforts,” said Evan Freeman, DNR regional watercraft inspection supervisor. “Inspectors can’t be at all accesses, so our volunteers are trained to show boaters how to inspect their own boats, explain why it’s important, and inform them about the laws.”
Invasive species are those that are not native to Minnesota and cause economic, environmental or human harm. Invasive species multiply rapidly, are free from the natural predators found in their native areas; they grow or spread quickly. Once introduced into local waters, they are nearly impossible to eliminate.
“Preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species is everyone’s responsibility,” Freeman said. “Working together, we can make a difference.”
