Land Acquisition in Town of Dunn: Dane County seeks stewardship grant

MCFARLAND – Dane County has applied for a 50% matching grant from the Acquisition and Development of Local Parks component of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to assist with the purchase of 20-acres in the Dane County Town of Dunn. The county will provide match to the grant award.

The property is being acquired to protect one-quarter mile of old Door Creek streambed and one-quarter mile of the channelized creek and banks. This will allow for the possible re-meandering of Door Creek into its former riverbed.

Property uses will include hiking, hunting, fishing, trapping, cross-county skiing, snow-shoeing, non-motorized boat access (canoe, kayak) and nature study, including wildlife observation and photography. The property extends public ownership along Door Creek for more than a mile north of Lake Kegonsa.

The DNR has made a preliminary determination that the proposed acquisition will not involve significant adverse environmental impacts and neither an environmental assessment nor environmental impact statement will be required for this action.

Persons can forward comments on the proposed acquisition to Vance Rayburn, Administrator, Customer and Employee Services Division, care of Renee Sanford, 608) 275-3213, 3911 Fish Hatchery Road, Fitchburg, WI 53711-5397 or e-mail to Renee.Sanford@Wisconsin.gov.

Comments must be received by February 13, 2009.
